North Bend Plantation: A Rich Tapestry of History
North Bend: Witness to Virginia’s History
Deeply entrenched in the history of Charles City County, North Bend’s people have a heritage spanning centuries. Constructed in 1801 by wealthy landowner John Minge for his wife, Sarah Harrison, the sister of President William Henry Harrison, this Federal Period Greek Revival-style home has been witness to pivotal moments in American history.
North Bend played a crucial role throughout the Civil War, serving as Union General Phillip Sheridan’s headquarters. The plantation’s story unfolds with tales of ownership changes and the resilience of its occupants. Notably, the plantation desk used by General Sheridan during this tumultuous time, remains in the house today.
Family Legacy
The Copland family, descendants of Edmund Ruffin, have maintained and cultivated the 850 acres of this National Register property. North Bend stands as a testament to their dedication to preserving history. Today, this Virginia Historic Landmark, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, welcomes visitors since 1984, offering bed and breakfast accommodations, group tours, and special events.
